gnine | Hikaru no go fan art...

A few months back, when I was crashing with

cienna, she introduced me to the joys of Hikaru no go. I'd been meaning to see it for ages and just had never gotten around to it. Suffice to say, I loved it and couldn't help but madly OTP Hikaru/Akira. (Let's face it, even my poor brother, whom we subject to far more slash speculations then he'd like, was, by the end stating that they would totally be playing games each night for who's on top. Victory!...course apparently he ordered my sister to NOT pass that statement along to me, as he, correctly, assumed I'd gloat. Which of course meant it was the first thing she told me when we next talked. And now I'm sharing it with all you...oops? ^_-)

Anyway, after some prompting by

cienna and as a thank you to her for putting me up for so long, I did this pic:

See, but then, when I showed it to my sister to C & C before sending it on to

cienna, she pointed out that one of the things that I kept going on about, and one of the major points of my pitch to her when pimping the series out, was how very much I loved how equal and reversible they were. There was no clear seme and uke. And yet in this pic above, Hikaru is definitely being rather...bottomish and Akira is clearly topping. Oops. So, she said the obvious solution was a follow-up pic. And seeing as she had a rather indisputable point, I obliged. Only with the holidays and all, I didn't finish it until now.

Hikaru no Go is ridiculously entertaining for a series that's basically about kids that play a board game. XD I love it.

Also, I love the pics, but especially the first one. Hikaru's expression!

It really is just a greatly fun series. Oh Japan, I love how you can make ANYTHING intense and dramatic! ^_-

Oh, man, but do these pictures take me back in fandom time. I would say the first one is by far my favorite. Mostly, because Hikaru is really, a very clueless person in general, and wouldn't see a kiss coming a mile off. Akira's hair, in a word: gorgeous. Love it. And I'm digging the calligraphy on the wall too. Nice detail there. And I'm digging how you cell shaded not only the two boys (men?), but also the background. It's often easy to use different drawing/coloring techniques for the backgrounds and the characters, but this can make them disjointed.

Two things I don't love about the first pic: 1. the plains. Your lines don't line up-- you've got multiple vanishing points and it's bugging me how the surface of the go board is at a different angle than the floor. If you stick with one vanishing point, Hikaru and Akira will seem like they're part of their environment, instead of being copy-pasted on top of it. 2. Hikaru's jacket. Unless the jacket is huge on Hikaru, there would be more tension in the cloth between Akira's fist and where the jacket attaches at the waist. The cloth seems too floppy for the tension that should be in it. Other than that, I think that you've drawn the folds of the cloth extremely well, especially Akira's shirt. Cloth is hella hard to draw. XD

How old are these two supposed to be in this drawing? They sure don't look 12... >.>

First off, I just gotta say, I love the in depth comments you give. A lot of your suggestions have helped so much!

So glad you liked 'em. And yeeeeah, I'm terrible about vanishing points. My problem is I do the backgrounds only on the computer, while everything else gets drawn by hand and they don't always match up. Also, in general I SUCK at perspective...oops ^_- But yeah, I reeeeally should work on that. (You always catch my weak points! ^_-)

And no, they're so not 12. I'm picturing this even a few years past the anime (which ends when they're like 15-16 ish. I do see them getting together, but they're both soooo involved with go, I think they'll both probably be late bloomers...

Such an awesome (heartbreaking) slashy (cruel) series (Sai! *sobs*) And then of course there is the arc at the end where they all sleep together while they're preparing for the tournament and Hikaru and Akira stay up all night. Playing Go. Yes. Idiots boys are adorable XD

Hee, yes...emphasis on the eternal part! ^_- It really is such a fantastic series (if only the manga hadn't ended where it did :-p)

That's the only problem with all these things- they end in places that leave you dying for more! Which is why we have to go find more pretties to help us get over that...and so the cycle of fandoms continues... :D

I really, really love the second one lol I don't know why, but it was great lol The first one seemed off to me, but I'm not sure why >.< LOL I'm no artist, so I gotta say, they both seem really good to me but the second one is awesome!

I totally love these. They're gorgeous. (And, oh, Hikaru and Akira - totally my happy place.) The first one, in particular, looks entirely likely; there are so many places in both the anime and the manga where it seemed like this was just about to happen.

Hee, thanks! Glad you like 'em! Actually, one of the things that allowed my friend to convince me to finally watch 'em was a review of several animated series you posted a while back. Your review of Hikago (especially Touya...unique fashion sense...or total lack there of) made me curious. So, thanks for that! ^___^

And, yeah, the main reason I did the first one was that by the end I really was shouting at them on multiple instances to just KISS already!

YAY. I am glad to have done my part in helping another person encounter the awesomeness that is Hikaru no Go! And Touya's fashion sense, of course. (I've read one story that posits that he's colorblind, and another that posits that his mother dresses him and she's really bitter about the Go thing, but nothing can wholly explain those purple knickerbockers.)

And I tend to want to shout at them, too. And then I remember that for them, Go is foreplay. (Which you've clearly captured in the second picture. Go you!) So it's kind of like they already are! Although it would have been better if they actually had.
