So here I am in jolly old England, settling in, classes just starting up (something I do plan to write about soon, I swear...) and in between the socializing, studying and exploring, I find myself watching quite a bit of TV. This is happening in part because I always watch more when I live alone (something to do when relaxing before bed or while eating dinner, etc) and partly because while I'm studying, I often use TV as a reward for getting work done (write another page on this essay, and you can watch another episode, etc). Good motivation for a horrible procrastinator like myself ^_-.

Anyways, my request: I'm looking for series to watch. (Just got through all of Criminal Minds, need something new...) It can be new or old (and by old, I mean whenever. Keep in mind one of my most recent fandoms was Man from UNCLE, and if that's not old skool, don't know what is...^_-) Any genre, whatever. If it's one of your favorites or just something you think'd be fun to watch. Just gimme a brief description, maybe why I might like it...(bonus points for anything with hurt/comfort, teaminess or siblings being cute)

Thanks flist, I'm counting on you! ^_^

ETA: As a reference to those who are reccing things, a list of what I have seen:

...I almost hesitate in posting this due to the sheer size...oops. And these are just the western fandoms, the list would be twice as long, at least, if I included anime/J-dramas...:-p

All of these are shows I've seen at least one full season of (some I haven't seen past that, like Heroes, due to lack of interest, but I've seen enough to get the feel of it)

Bold is for shows that I fanned on, by watching repeatedly/reading fic/reccing it, etc.

* means fandoms I've actually produced stuff for, be it art, fic, vids, whatnot...

30 Rock, Alien Nation, Arrested Development, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Babylon 5, Batman Beyond, Battlestar Galactica, Being Human, Big Bang Theory, Burn Notice, Carnivale, Castle, Colditz, Criminal Minds, Dinosaurs, Doctor Who, Due South, Eureka, Farscape, Firefly, Forever Knight, Gargoyles, Gilmore Girls, Heroes, Highlander*, Hustle, Invisible Man,Jeeves and Wooster, Justice League Unlimited, Legend (1995), Leverage, Life, Life on Mars, Lois and Clark, Lost, Malcom in the Middle, Man from UNCLE*, Merlin, NCIS*, NCIS: LA, Night Court, Numb3rs, Once a Thief, Prison Break, Professionals, Psych, Pushing Daisies, Quantum Leap, Queer as Folk (UK only), Real Ghostbusters*, Red Dwarf , Sapphire and Steel, Scrubs, Seaquest, Sentinel*, Seven Days, Sliders, Smallville*, Star Trek (all except for Enterprise), Stargate Atlantis*, Stargate SG-1*, Starsky and Hutch, Static Shock, Supernatural, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles , The Shield, Torchwood, Traders, True Blood, Twin Peaks, United States of Tara, Wiseguy, WitchBlade, Xena, X-Files*, X-men (Animated Series and Evolution)

...And chances are I've missed something...:-p

As someone already mentioned in the comments about keeping an eye on this post for ideas of there own, if there's any shows in this list you're interested in, feel free to ask for a description, rec, review, etc...

I did my PhD in lovely London-yeah UK! As for shows, I always enjoyed Profiler and Providence - female centric shows and the occasional JFlan appearance, which always helps. And Robert Davi in Profiler was a sympathetic character for a change. Also, quirky Ed - a lawyer in a bowling alley just screams mayhem. And Northern Exposure in its first years; quirky as hell always, but the last season or two kind of went off the rails. Old ER is fun for young George Clooney and Hewlett shows up somewhere in the first five years, as does JFlan's wife.

Hope something strikes your fancy!

I'm enjoying London so far (though it is by far the biggest city I've lived in, so that's taking a little getting used to...)

Hmm, will have to read up on Profiler and Providence...Northern Exposure, hmm, that's a possibility. I know several people who were very fond of it...one to consider. Thanks so much! ^_^

Series that I've enjoyed include Scarecrow & Mrs. King (Young Bruce Boxleitner = yay!), Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (corny but fun, especially the eps with Kermit), and Time Trax (I came this || close to writing hot hologram love fic between SELMA and Automan). Almost everything else I've fanned over has already made it onto your list, or else something about it makes me not want to rec. (For example, I enjoyed Beauty and the Beast, but the series ending was horrible.)

Edited to add: Speaking of Bruce Boxleitner, why is Chuck not on your list already? Whoa.

...Re: Chuck, to be honest, because I thought it was just some sitcom (just looked it up, and yes, that does sound rather fun!) Thank you thank you for the rec!

...And I have to say, I've been curious about Scarecrow and Mrs. King, if for no other reason than it has BB, who I am rather fond of (course, watching that may just make me wanna watch B5 again...as so many things do ^_-)

It's that last little sentence fragment that scares me.

Perhaps you this is a series not in your taste. I've never heard of anyone who has fanned on this, besides me. But I think "Alias Smith & Jones" is a wonderful series. I fanned on that one long before I knew that was what I was doing (had never heard the word, and none of my friends were into fanning).

Why not start up some of the british crime stuff they have a lot and they are good. :)

I just finished watching all the old seasons of How I Met Your Mother, largely using it for dinnertime and drawing background. It's amusing, it has grown-up Doogie Howser, it has a cute married couple and several forever-friendships.

Someone else up there mentioned Ed--I watched that for Justin Long, of course, but it's also pretty cute fluffy small-town feel-good friendshippy stuff.

The only non-comedy things I'm watching right now are Supernatural and Dexter. Dexter is still brilliant, but not precisely feel-good. Although there is cute partner stuff and sibling stuff.

"Coupling" for a fun british comedy. And "Rome" for some great history.

Can't you guys agree to watch it together in your separate locations? I used to simul-watch stuff with my long distance bf -- we would both watch stuff at the same time and chat online while we were watching. Or you could just agree to watch on the same day, if that's too hard to manage.

I agree, I couldn't BELIEVE Buffy wasn't on your list. So much smarter and wittier than the title would lead you to believe! It's one of the best-written shows I've ever watched.

Yeeeaah, Buffy has been on my list for years (I've seen a few eps here and there, and I know a LOT about it, have many friends into it). It's one of those things that we kept putting off, because we *knew* it'd be a timesink.

As for watching it separately, the problem is twofold in that she doesn't really like watching things alone (and as said above, the bro and his girlfriend, whom she's rooming with, just watched it so won't wanna watch it again) and the fact that I'll almost certainly watch it faster than her if I'm on my own...a LOT faster. I have this bad tendency to um...eheheh...marathon like crazy when there's no one there to stop me...For example, I just went through all of Criminal Minds (fours seasons plus) in a little over a week...(now I was sick in bed for half of that and classes hadn't started at the time, so had a lot of free time, but still...I'm crazy :-p). My solution is she should just put out on her flist the request that someone show her it. I can't imagine there isn't some happy fangirl in that area that wouldn't jump at the chance to share their fandom...

...have you SEEN Supernatural? It's hard not to slash 'em at least a little. I mean the show jokes about it all the time. Hell, they've even brought up the incest fanfic directly on the show, so...y'know, in honesty, I had to tack on that last part...

Hee, just watched it! That is adorable! And you're right, quite quite slashy. Though poor Bunny is truly a complete idiot. Sweet...but um...not the sharpest tool in the shed, eh? ^_- I'll be curious to see more...

Know any names in particular I should look for?

Yeah, I've been considering HIMYM, caught an ep or two and niichan's this summer while channel surfing. Neil Patrick Harris was more than enough to make me stop and watch...

How long is Ed? Is it a current series? Hee, you and your JL, you're so adorable! ^_^ *huggles*

Yeah, I'm curious about Dexter. Matt and Miriam were watching it and I saw one or two with them. Definitely looks like a good show, and I noted the sib stuff...I'm just not sure if I'm in the mood for something quite that dark...

...I'm torn about SGU. I'm waiting until there's a batch of eps I can mainline to get an overall view. Stargate premiers in general are never the best, so...

I've been hearing about Glee, it is fun then?

Date: 2009-10-12 12:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] byakkodan-slash.livejournal.com
This premier was pretty good. They've thrown a lot of money at what they know is a profitable franchise. I think they're going for more a serious BSG vibe than the more kitchy Atlantas-ness. Like any series, we'll just have to wait and see.

Glee is a really fresh and fun series. It's not heavy at all, it's a good background series. There's a lot of song and dance supported by story around quirky characters. It's all up on Hulu... or at least it was. Most of it is up on hulu.

I miss you. T_T

Offhand, I think Ed's about five decent-size seasons long. When I watched it in '07, it hadn't been put on DVD yet, so it's hard to find, but you can. It's finished; I think it aired in the 90's...?

It's funny, but Dexter doesn't feel all that dark, a lot of the time. It's also got some pretty wicked black humour. But if you need to be careful of your mood right now, probably best to stick to lighter things.

You mentioned you watched 30 Rock--did you like it? I need more background stuff. :p

It can be arranged.

I think we will bring one episode of lots of different series on Saturday and inflict...sorry....show you them to see what takes your fancy. A sort of taster session for new fandoms if you will.
