Book meme ganked from
ionaonie cause, well BOOKS. Also, I'm distracting myself at work while I wait for multiple people to get back to me.
1. Favorite childhood book?
I’d probably have to say the Dragonriders of Pern series because in the end, those are the books that really got me into reading when I was 9. Of those, The White Dragon and the Harper Hall trilogy were the ones I reread more than any other.
2. What are you reading right now?
Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale. (Lets here it for random fantasy slash novels! Ahh, nothing like some guilty pleasures when work is long! ^_-)
Also I started the most recent Artemis Fowl book a few weeks back and then got distracted, must go finish that!
Oh, and I'm rereading Changes out loud with my mom as she's finally gotten to that book in the Dresden series and I'm enjoying watching her reactions as we read. (WHY OH WHY IS THE NEXT ONE DELAYED?!? *sobs*)
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
None, don’t really use the library much these days. When I was in grad school last year, I used it a lot, but back home our library is reeeally tiny so either I just buy or get ebooks.
4. Bad book habit?
Many. I bend the spines back, I’ll toss them around, keep them in my backpack. Also this bad tendency to read the endings when I’m “just checking how many pages it is, REALLY!”…err...Oops ^_-
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
None (see above)
6. Do you have an e-reader?
No, but I wants one preeeecious! So shiny! My sister has one and I was lusting after it at Christmas. With the amount of travel I do, it's just more practical, not to mention it would save on paper from the fanfic I at times print.
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
Err...well, considering the first question, I'd say several at once. And often I have some fanfic going on the side as well. It depends, though. If I'm really involved in a series, I lose track of everything else (and I don't just mean other books. I'll forget to eat, sleep becomes unimportant, etc...)
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Not really.
9. Least favorite book you read this year (so far?)
Don't have one, as of yet. We're less than a month in and I've basically enjoyed all the books I've read thus far. None have stood out as particularly bad or particularly good.
10. Favorite book you've read this year?
See above.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Rarely, unless it's for work/school.
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Sci-fi/fantasy, some mysteries, some period pieces and fan fic. Lots and lots and LOTS of fic.
13. Can you read on the bus?
Sure, bus, car, train, plane, probably on a boat though not sure I've ever actually done so. At night on any said mode of transport (so many times as I kid on long car trips I'd be in the back, flashlight clamped in my mouth, pouring over my latest novel as we bumped along.)
14. Favorite place to read?
My bed, piled with big poofy pillows and blankets.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
I LOVE shoving book at people. I'll lend pretty much anything to anyone, except for one or two signed copies, which I have big warning covers on them to make sure no one else lends them out either.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
Errr...yes, but I try not to.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
Are they text books? Cause then yes, ALL THE TIME. My fiction, not so much.
18. Not even with text books?
See above.
19. What is your favorite language to read in?
English. I do enjoy battling my way through Japanese at times, but sometimes it can be frustrating, especially when I'm tired or whatever I'm reading has reached the climax and I just need to know what's going to happen RIGHT NOW!
20. What makes you love a book?
Good characters. I like a good plot and strong writing as well, but if I don't love the characters, you can have the most intricate plot or exquisite prose and I still won't even bother to finish half the time *cough*James Joyce *cough*. Also, I am a huuuuuuge sucker for hurt/comfort, be it in books or fic.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
Totally depends on who I'm reccing things to and what I know they like.
22. Favorite genre?
Sci-fi/fantasy; urban fantasy, mystery/PI
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
More non-fiction, biographies and science in particular.
24. Favorite biography?
Been ages since I've read one, though the one that stands out that I still remember was Eva Peron's.
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
No. Well, unless a book to help on the SAT grammar section counts?
26. Favorite cookbook?
The net. I almost always just surf for recipes. Also, my mother, she's a better resource than any book.
27. Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
See the above thing about books this year.
28. Favorite reading snack?
Err...food? No, really, I often like to munch when I read, but I'm not at all particular on what.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Hmmm, can't really think of any. Hype doesn't particularly affect me one way or another.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
Don't read critics that much, so couldn't really say.
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
For books, I'm fine with it; fic, I'm a lot more hesitant. If I don't like something I'll usually just not comment.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose?
Fluently in Japanese. Additionally, Chinese would be cool.
33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
Several of the texts I had to read for grad school. Ricoeur was a bitch to understand (he was rather enamored of intellectual wanking all over to the point my ridiculously intelligent professor was like, "yeah, his goal when writing this was probably to show up everyone else and prove his intellectual superiority, so don't worry if you don't get most of it").
34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
None.
35. Favorite Poet?
Don't really do Poetry. Fond of Robert Frost and Tennyson I guess...
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
Unless it's for school, none, as I said above. While I was working on my dissertation? Like 15 or 20.
37. How often have you returned book to the library unread?
See above.
38. Favorite fictional character?
Ummmmm, I'm supposed to choose? And are we taking fictional-book or all fictional chars cause um...yeeeah...
To name a few, off the top of my head:
Dream (from Neil Gaiman's Sandman , well, and Death, too...
Lex
Sam (LotR)
Sophie (Howl's Moving Castle)
Thomas (Dresden)
Haplo...well, and Alfred
Methos
Rodney
Ender
Kenshin
Iwase
Subaru
Fai
Ivonava
Menolly
There's so many more...
39. Favorite fictional villain?
Err, Lex again? Sephiroth (because I'm terribly shallow)? Morden. Ugh, so blanking...
40. Books I’m most likely to bring on vacation?
Depends entirely on what I’m reading at the time.
41. The longest I’ve gone without reading.
Without reading a book or just period? Cause if things like blogs and magazines and such count, probably hours at most.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce.SO. BORING!! There's been others but I'm blanking.
43. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
Depends on what I’m reading. If it’s something I'm enjoying? NOTHING. Including necessary bodily functions such as sleeping, and eating and going to the bathroom etc. If its something I *have* to read, for school, work, etc. Um, anything and everything. I'm easily amused.
44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
Lord of the Rings, easily.
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
Um, some of the Harry Potter films? Also, Howl's Moving Castle. It was Miyazaki and the film itself is not bad, but I love that book SO MUCH and the film changed so much, I just couldn't enjoy it.
46. The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
Ehehehehe, I plead the fifth.
47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
Um...*shifty eyes* ALL the time. I'm terrible about skipping ahead.
48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
If I'm bored, plain and simple.
49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
My books, less so. But my manga, oh yes. If I have the space, I like to sort them by genre, publisher and author.
50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them?
Ehehe, lets just say, when moving back home from Japan, it was clothing and shoes that got tossed. But my sister and I payed to ship six VERY FULL and VERY heavy boxes filled with books back to the States. I've spent my whole life surrounded by books, can't bear to part with them.
51. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
Twilight. The brief excerpts I've read were bad enough.
52. Name a book that made you angry.
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. It was required reading one summer for HS. Now, required reading alone often makes me resent books, even if I'd otherwise enjoy them, but this one was not only painfully long but I LOATHED the main character as well as most of the underlying themes. They went counter to a lot of my own views of the world.
53. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
The Great Gatsby More required reading, but actually quite enjoyed it.
54. A book that you expected to like but didn’t?
The fourth Nightrunner book by Lynn Flewelling. We waited soooo long for it, and then it was kinda a disappointment. But I liked the fifth one a lot more and I'm curious about the 6th one, so we'll see.
55. Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Fanfic. Well, also very recently the plethora of cheap m/m novels that have been coming out. Most of them are rather meh, but some have writing of a quality I can stand and well...I like my slash, I can't help it! ^_-
